Winter Woolies .….

Now Christmas is over it’s time to get the knitting needles out and get ready for Winter.

No matter if its for you, family, friends or the new grandchild or child on the way, that you’ve just found out about over the holidays.

New out this week is the Newent, an easy to knit and stunning cardigan.

Alternatively have a look through the wide choice a baby and toddler patterns on my site.

Coming soon, one of garments made during my design process, join my mail list and get ahead of the game to snap up these one off products.

Now Christmas has gone …..

So now I can post some of the pictures for commissioned and personal products that went out to happy customers ….. but we didn’t want so spoil the surprise, even so I’ve blocked out the vehicle registrations and names for customer confidentiality.

As usual all the designs are individual, mainly due to my aim to up-cycle and repurpose fabrics. This focus means I don’t just buy materials off the role but purchase excess stock and end of roles, ensuring the most ethical use of materials, whilst keeping my cost at the best possible prices to pass on to my customers.

Many thanks for viewing my update and I look forward to seeing you on Instagram.

A slight mishap and a fight with a kerb that I didn’t seen, has meant some elements of production here at Dizzy Tyke Designs has had to take a back seat for a short while. But thanks to the NHS at Worthing and Worcestershire , I’m now plated and screwed back together.

It hasn’t meant any cushions have been delayed, however processing new knitting patterns is now delayed until after Christmas.

Design Process ….

From this to……

To this…..

Ever wondered how I create detailed appliqué here at Dizzy Tyke Designs?

Although my Brother machines does a lot of the hard work with the stitching, the cutting and placing of appliqué is all done by hand.

This manual aspect is what allows me to accommodate customers colour and fabric choices.

Ring Cushions ….

Got a special occasion when you want a ring to have that ‘BANG’ impact. Well Dizzy Tykes new range of ring cushions will help you achieve that ‘WOW’ memory.

The individually designed ring cushions are designed with gifting rings and creating a memory. Be it birthdays, Christmas, weddings, engagements or just that special day with that special someone.

Many have a Celtic theme , but are purposefully modest in design, enabling the ring or rings to be the star attraction.

It could be a gift left in a strategic place for a surprise or reveal or carries by a ring barer making their way down the aisle.

Last Minute Christmas gifts ….

Although I do have different platforms I sell on coming direct to the maker is always preferential. To celebrate this use the coupon code Christmas22 to get a 10% discount on all cushions until the end of December2022. Don’t forget last posting dates and the planned Royal Mail industrial action when planning when to order.

The range of cushions avayalbe is constantly evolving and changing. Evolving because customers request designs that once developed are prefect to join the selection and changing because the materials available for cushions and appliqué is never constant. This is because I source my fabrics from excess stock and end of line, meaning that its always new fabric but often repurposed.

Here are a few recently added. Including the new kid on the block the rear view of the ever popular Defender.

New additions to the range of knitting patterns has also taken a back seat through this unusual year…but this amazing ladies cardigan is in the final stages of pattern checking. The Fladbury should be released in time for Easter. Follow me on Instagram for updates and discount codes.

How to start top down triangular shawl ….

Many Scarfs, Shawls and Kerchiefs that are knitted top down and are triangular start with a garter tab cast on.

Which if you are not familiar with can look very complicated, when in fact it is a simple technique that can stand you in good stead for lots of projects.

I’ve been asked by a few uses if I can produce a guide on this method…so here goes…..Here is a step by step guide to mastering the technique.

In this example we are going to cast on 5 stitches, many patterns call for 2 or 3 and some up to 20 or 30 dependant on the design, but the principal remains the same.

Take your chosen yarn and needles and cast on 5 stitches…

Work 5 rows in garter stitch (knit all stitches on all rows). We are calling the edge these stitches are on ‘A’.

…at the end on your 5th row, place a stitch maker, now you are now going to pick up 5 stitches along the edge ‘B’.

…you now have 10 stitches.

…next place another stitch marker and pick up 5 stitches along edge ‘C’, this is your original cast on edge. this can be a little fiddly if you are using fine yarn.

…you now have 15 stitches and will be ready to commence your chosen design.

In this picture the stitches are split onto 2 needles, it shows the work you have done creates a small triangle from which to work, this is often called a garter tab.

Leicester Shawl

As you can see from the samples above, they both have a garter stitch edges, but the design looks very different as the number of stitches picked up and worked vary.
